Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University women's soccer team squandered a 3-0 lead as the University of New Haven fought back to force a 4-3 overtime victory in conference action tonight at Competition Field. With the loss the Panthers drop to 8-5-2 and 6-5-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Chargers improve to 9-6-3 and 6-6-2.
Despite just three shots in the first half, the Panthers led 2-0 at the half. Junior Emily Dunne put the Panthers on board in the 27th minute with help from junior Brianne McDonnell. Senior Caitlin Morrison made it a 2-0 game at 30:53 with a feed from senior Elise Maniguet.
The duo of Dunne and McDonnell teamed up again to notch the third goal of the evening at 67:58. A penalty kick goal by Alexa DellaRocco at 79:35 seemed to spur on the Chargers. Three minutes later, Marta Bertsos took advantage of a scramble in front of the net to slip to make it a one point game. DellaRocco found herself in scoring position again at 84:34, beating a Panther defender to knot the score, 3-3.
Similiar to last week's overtime tie, the Panthers struggled in the extra minutes and were not able to set up a shot. In contrast, the Chargers managed three shots on goal, including the game-winner at 97:28 as Claire Siekaniec put the ball up and out of reach of sophomore goalkeeper Dorothy Connolly.
New Haven held a 15-7 shot advantage over Adelphi and a 8-1 margin on corner kicks. Connolly finished with six saves, while Kim Taylor made two saves for the Chargers.
The Panthers are back in action this Saturday, October 24, as they close out their regular season home schedule against Bentley College at 2:30 p.m. This is the final Think Pink contest for the fall season. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
