The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University this evening on Competition Field. With seven goals scored combined as well as 18 shot attempts, the Panthers held on for the 4-3 victory. The win improves Adelphi to 9-5 and 4-1 in the Northeast-10, while Southern Connecticut drops to 5-11 and 4-4 in the conference.
The Panthers struck first, 16:52 into the first half, when sophomore Brittany Kinsley found classmate Julianne Gerbino for the score. Sophomore Natasha Pedzik would give the Panthers a two-goal lead when she collected a rebound in front of the net for the score, 5:31 after Gerbino's tally. Less than three minutes after Pedzik's goal, the Owls cut the lead in half when Dieny Charlot beat sophomore Lucia Vigliotti on a penalty stoke.
Adelphi wasted only 29 seconds into the second half to extend their lead back to two goals when Gerbino setup sophomore Jeanette Heimerle for her third goal of the season. Pedzik added her second tally of the game, off a deflection, to give the Panthers a commanding 4-1 lead. The Owls found respond with two goals in less than a minute to cut the deficit to one goal. The first goal came from Lyndel Vagnini, which was assisted by Laura Dembofsky. Southern Connecticut's third goal came from Laurie Cockerline, which was setup by Ann Berry. The Owls comeback wasn't enough as the Panthers held on for the one-goal victory.
Lauren Zarella stopped four shots in net for the Owls in defeat.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, October 15 when they travel to take on American International College at 7:00 pm.
