Field Hockey Holds Off Franklin Pierce In Overtime, 1-0

The Adelphi University field hockey team played host to Franklin Pierce University this afternoon on Competition Field. With the game scoreless after regulation, sophomore Julianne Gerbino scored the game-winner with 4:30 remaining in the overtime period. The win improves the Panthers to 8-5 and 3-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Ravens drop to 7-7 and 3-2 in the conference.

The Panthers controlled the game throughout the first half as the got five shots to the Ravens two, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 3-0. The Ravens came out of the half aggressive and applied the pressure throughout. Franklin Pierce outshot the Panthers 7-2 and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners in the second half. Sophomore Lucia Vigliotti and Brittany Nyzio kept their respected teams in the game throughout, making a number of big saves.

The overtime period was back-and-forth with a total of nine shots in 10:30 of play until Gerbino found the back of the net off her own rebound to seal the win. Gerbino's tally is her team-leading 12th goal of the season.

Vigliotti was tremendous in net all day for the Panthers, en route to a 10-save afternoon. Nyzio recorded five saves in the loss.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, October 13 when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University at 7:00 pm on Competition Field.
