The Adelphi men's soccer team played host to Howard University on Saturday, October 10 in their first Atlantic Soccer Conference game of the year. The Panthers out shot the Bison by the count of 26-4 but could not find the back of the net, earning a 0-0 tie. Adelphi is currently 7-1-4 overall and 0-0-1 in ASC play, while Howard posts a record of 2-8-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference.
Adelphi and howard played tight in the early going as the Panthers only had a two shot advantage after one half of play, 5-3. However, in the second period Adelphi turned up the pressure, out shooting Howard, 11-1. The Panthers really got rolling in overtime as their three best opportunities came in the extra frames.
In the opening minutes of the second overtime Michael Aquino had an opportunity from just inside the Howard penalty box that was turned away by Howard's Victor Thomas, but the rebound got away from a diving Thomas and onto the foot of Ryan Vulin. Vulin's attempt at goal was turned away by a Bison defender and cleared, ending the threat.
Just minutes later a Val Charalambous corner kick found the head of Dan Larenius, who flicked the ball toward the Bison goal, a sure tally was snatched away by a diving Thomas. The Panthers final chance came on a strong strike from Issa Tall from about 20 yards out that forces Thomas to make another difficult stop.
In all Thomas made 16 saves to earn the tie, while Adelphi's Thorne Holder turned away one. Adelphi also held a strong advantage in corner kicks, attempting eight to none for Howard.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, October 13 when they play host to Longwood at 3:00 pm in another ASC clash.
