Men's Basketball Moves Past Philadelphia, 61-47

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Philadelphia University on Tuesday, January 6 in a non-conference contest. The Panthers held the Rams to just 27 percent shooting and 17 points in the first half, building a 17 point halftime lead (34-17) on the way to a 61-47 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 7-4 overall, while Philadelphia falls to 8-3.

Both teams started out slow, as Philadelphia took a 13-12 lead on a Mike Dunn jumper with 13:53 on the clock. From there the Panthers turned up the defense, holding the Rams to just four points for the rest of the half, while they reeled off 21 of their own. The 21-4 run over the final 13:53 of the half was capped by a Richard Byrd triple with one second left in the half, giving Adelphi a 34-17 edge.

Philadelphia would get as close as eight points in the second half and Adelphi would push their lead to as many as 16, but the outcome was never in doubt, as the Panthers picked up a 61-47 win.

Marcus Lemon led three Rams in double figures with 14 points, while Russell Frederick chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds and Malcolm Ingram added 10 points.

Byrd led all players with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Casey Cosgrove added 12 points. Sky Khaleel also reached double figures, scoring 11 points and pulling down seven misses.

Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, January 8 when they play host to the University of Bridgeport at 7:00 pm.
