The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team opened up a 47-30 halftime lead over the Adelphi University Panthers on Saturday afternoon and went on to post an 81-67 East Coast Conference home win in Hubbell Gym. With the win, UB is now 7-12 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Adelphi falls to 9-10 overall and is also 6-4 in the ECC.
Adelphi was led by seniors Danielle Parks and Serita Lee, who each scored 16 points. Freshman Theresa Foley contributed 11 points off the bench while sophomore Ashley Caiafa had 10 points.
Despite shooting 56.0 percent in the first half, the Panthers found themselves down by 17 at the half. This was because the Purple Knights connected on 20-of-31 from the field (64.5%) and 7-of-12 from three point range.
Adelphi faired better in the second half, outscoring UB 37-34. The Panthers closed to within five points, 70-65, on a Caiafa jumper with 3:05 left in regulation, then went cold as the Purple Knights closed on an 11-2 run.
UB junior Shannon Malone was the leading scorer and rebounder for both teams on the afternoon, as she scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Fours other Purple Knights reach double figure scoring in the win, junior Sidney Parsons with 18 points, senior Siobhan Moore with 12 points and sophomore Julia Busalt netted 11 points. Senior Sandra Dziurdzia completed the double figure scorers for UB with 10 points off the Bridgeport bench.
Adelphi continues it conference road trip on Wednesday as they travel to Queens College for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
