The Adelphi University women's basketball team trailed by 18 points at the half and were never unable to sustain a consistent rally, falling 74-62 on Wednesday night.The Golden Lions improve to 11-5, while the Panthers fall to 8-8 and 5-2 in the ECC.
Senior Lisa Manetta led the Panthers with 13 points and five assists, while freshman Theresa Foley had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Keri Schumacher tallied all of her 12 points off the bench in the second half.
Dowling led from the opening tip-off, shooting 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the field in the half. In contrast, Adelphi connected on just 11-of-28 (39.3%). The Panthers knotted the score at 9-9 on a trifecta by sophomore Ashley Caiafa at 16:04, but that would be the closest they would get. The Golden Lions outscored the Panthers 24-10 over the next ten minutes to open a 14 point lead, 33-19, at 6:19. Adelphi went cold with 2:42 left in the half, allowing Dowling to hold onto a 18-point cushion at intermission.
The second half began much the same with Dowling pushing the lead to 23 points, 53-30, on a three-pointer by Shanasia Franklin at 15:18. A Schumacher jumper sparked a 21-9 Panther rally which closed the gap to 11 points, 62-51, with 7:46 left in regulation. However Adelphi was never able to break beyond a double-digit deficit, falling, 74-62.
The Golden Lions had four players in double figures led by Simona Bartkova with 17. Christie Marrone had 15 points, followed by Kelly Puwalski and Franklin with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, January 24, when they host Concordia College at 1:00 p.m. This also marks the team's annual participation in the NCAA sponsored Take A Kid to the Game Day which encourages youth activity in sport. Children under 12 will be admitted free with a paid adult.
