The Adelphi men's basketball team traveled to Oakdale, New York on Wednesday, January 21 for a 7:00 pm meeting with East Coast Conference opponent Dowling College. The Panthers A Richard Byrd triple with 1:31 left pulled Adelphi within one point, but the Panthers could get no closer, falling 58-54. The loss drops Adelphi to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the ECC, while Dowling improves to 7-9 overall.
Dowling and Adelphi battled back and forth in the early stages of the first half, with the Golden Lions taking an advantage and the Panthers cutting it to one on two occasions. With 7:45 left in the first, Dowling took an eight point lead, 21-13 and then pushed the edge to 13, 33-20, with 1:58 left.
A Byrd jumper with 1:07 to play would cut the lead to 11, 33-22, which is how the Panthers would enter the half.
The Golden Lions would push their advantage to 13 early in the second half and still clung to a double digit lead, 42-32, with 12:22 left in the game. From there Adelphi would battle back, using a 8-0, that was capped by a Byrd three pointer to pull within two points, 42-40 with 8:23 on the clock.
The Panthers kept the pressure up and cut the margin to just one, 51-50, on another Byrd three with 1:31 left. Dowling answered with a triple of their own to take a four point lead on the way to a four point win, 58-54.
Josh Lowe led the way for Dowling with 18 points and six rebounds, while Sean Smith added 14 and David Seagers scored 13 and pulled down eight rebounds.
Byrd scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 12 misses in the loss, while Sky Khaleel added 15 points and seven boards.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, January 24 when they play host to Concordia College at 3:00 pm.
