The Adelphi women's basketball team played host to Mercy College on Saturday, January 17 in an East Coast Conference contest. The Panthers found themseleves down 14 at the half, but used a 40 point second frame to secure a 63-61 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in the ECC, while Mercy falls to 4-10 on the season and 1-4 in conference action.
Merch opened the game with an 8-2 run to take a six point lead, while Adelphi responded with five straight points, to cut the margin to one, 8-7, with 14:00 on the clock. The Mavericks countered with a 17-4 run to take a 14 point lead, 25-11 with 6:57 remaining in the half.
Adelphi would pull within 10 points, but seven straight points from Mercy gave the Mavericks a 17 point lead with 1:22 left in the first half. An Ashley Caiafa triple with 23 seconds left cut the margin to 14 points, 37-23 at the half.
The Panthers wasted no time in the second half, using a 17-2 run in the opening seven and a half minutes to retake the lead, 40-39 on a Caiafa lay-up. However, Mercy battled back and had possesion of a seven point edge, 59-52, with 5:48 on the clock, courtesy of an Ashley Borofsky three.
Adelphi responded again with a quick 6-0 run to pull within one, 59-58, before retaking the lead for good, 62-61 on a Serita Lee lay-up. A Caiafa free throw with one second left on the clock iced the win for Adelphi, 63-61.
Christina Baxter led the way for Mercy with 19 points, 10 assists and three rebounds, while Ashley Finnegan put up 17 points and pulled down 14 misses. Borofsky also reached double figures with 16 points.
Caiafa posted 16 points for Adelphi, while also picking up eight rebounds. Lisa Manetta had 15 points, as Lee scored 13 and pulled down 13 misses.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, January 21 when they travel to Oakdale, New York for a 5:00 pm meeting with Dowling.
