Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi women's basketball team played host to Molloy College on Wednesday, January 14 in a battle of the East Coast Conference unbeaten teams. The Panthers entered the second half with a two point edge but could not hold it, falling 50-41. The loss drops Adelphi to 7-7 overall and 4-1 in ECC play, while Molloy improves to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference.
The first half was back and forth as there were four lead changes, and neither team would allow more than a four point cushion. Kymira Woodberry of the Lions scored first on a layup just 12 seconds into the start of the game, but the Panthers responded by a Serita Lee jumper. The score would be knotted six more times before the end of the first half with each team's defense playing tough. With 19 seconds left, senior Danielle Parks found the bottom of the net on a jumper to put her team up by two. Lee blocked an attempted E.J. Dryer layup to hold the two point lead heading into the second half, 21-19.
Defense on each side would hold the score for 2:11 into the second half until a Lee jumper finally netted the first basket of the half. The four point lead would be short lived as Dryer quickly responded seven seconds later with a basket of her own to cut the Panther lead back to two. With 11:44 left on the clock, the score stood at 27 a piece. At 9:06, a layup by Lisa Abitante sparked a Lion 9-0 run and set the Panthers back nine points. Adelphi would get no closer than within five points of the Lions as time ran out with the score favoring the Lions, 50-41.
Woodberry led with game highs in points (15) and rebounds (18), followed by her teammates Abitante and Tatiana Lopez who each chipped in with 15 and 11 points respectively.
Lee led the Panthers with 14 points and 17 rebounds while Ashley Caiafa added nine points in the loss.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, January 17, when they host Mercy College in an ECC matchup. The game is scheduled for a 1pm start.
