The Adelphi University field hockey team played host to Assumption College on Saturday, September 6. The Greyhounds held a 3-0 lead late in the second half, but two Panther goals cut the edge to one, however Adelphi could get no closer, falling 3-2. The loss Adelphi to 0-1, while Assumption evens their record at 1-1.
Assumption jumped on Adelphi early, scoring two quick goals in the first half. Thr first tally came off the stick of Hillary Zysk, unassisted. Less then five minutes later Maura Strickland sent a feed from Sandy Garney into the back of the Panther goal, giving the Greyhounds a 2-0 edge at the half.
Assumption increased their lead to three goals midway through the second half as Michelle Pasquale took control of a Brittany Ford pass and beat Adelphi's Lucia Vigliotti. However, the Panthers clawed their way back into the game as Julianne Gerbino notched her first goal of the season with 16:37 left in the contest.
Just 1:37 laster Gerbino found the back of the net again, courtesy of a Ornella Schneider pass. Gerbino's second goal of the game and her collegiate career cut Assumptions lead to just one goal with 15 minutes remaining, but Adelphi could not get the equalizer, falling 3-2.
Vigliotti made five saves in her collegiate debut, while Danielle Luongo picked up five stops as well.
Adelphi returns to action on September 13 when they play host to Kutztown at 4:00 pm.
