Garden City, N.Y. -
The Panthers played host to the Rams of Philadelphia University this afternoon at Competition Field. Adelphi built a three goal lead in the first half but would not be able to hold it as the Rams charged back and sent the game to overtime where they eventually came out on top, 4-3. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 2-4 while the Rams advance to 3-8.
The first action of the game came at 13:35 when Panther freshman, Julianne Gerbino beat Anne Strobel on an assist from freshman Jeanette Heimerle to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, the Panthers struck again, this time on a goal by freshman Jessica Mulhern assisted by Heimerle, her second of the game. The Panther attack continued as Mulhern netted her second goal of the game off of an assist by Gerbinno to extend the lead to three. The Panthers would head into the second half with a commanding three goal lead.
Philadelphia came out fired up as they finally responded less than two minutes into the second half. A corner by sophomore Lynette Buck set up senior Carson Mumma for an assist on a goal by senior Brooke Woodland to cut the lead to two. Around six and a half minutes into the second half, sophomore Crystal Gray received a yellow card and would sit out for five minutes forcing the Panthers to play a man down. With just under 9:30 left in play, a great save by freshman goalie, Jacqueline Grant stopped a shot by Woodland on a breakaway. However, the Rams came charging back and scored two quick goals. The first goal came off the stick of Buck and about a minute and a half later, Woodland scored her second goal to tie the game at three and send it into overtime.
In the 72nd minute of the game, Buck, off of a Philadelphia corner, beat Grant for her second goal of the game and gave her team their third win of the season.
Panther goalie, Grant had nine saves on the day while the Ram keeper had four.
Up next, the Panthers travel to C.W. Post to take on the Pioneers on October 7 at 4:00 pm.
