Garden City, N.Y. -
The Panthers played host to the Valiants of Manhattanville this afternoon in their second straight home game. Adelphi jumped out to a 1-0 lead early on, but the Valiants responded with two goals in the second half as the Panthers would not respond. With the loss the Panthers drop to 2-3 while Manhattanville advances to 2-4.
The Panthers got out to an early start as freshman Julianne Gerbino picked up the ball inside the Valiant arc and was able to beat the goalie to put Adelphi up 1-0. The Valiants had a chance to score on a penalty shot by Maura Bruen, but could not connect. With just under five minutes remaining in the first half, Lauren Pettoruto received a yellow card to give the Panthers a one person advantage. Adelphi could not capitalize as the first half would wind down with the score standing at 1-0.
2:50 into the second half, a shot by Alyssa Coughlan threatened the lead, but an athletic save by freshman goalie, Jacqueline Grant kept the Valiants scoreless. However, Manhattanville's persistence paid off as Pettoruto, on an assist from Bruen, knotted the game at one. With just over 11 minutes to go, a corner by Manhattanville's Abbe Grimes set up Pettoruto who assisted Kirsten Spelman for the go-ahead goal. Pettoruto, with just over eight minutes to go, received a red card, her second of the game, forcing her to sit out the remainder of the match to give Adelphi a man-up advantage. Another yellow card received by Manhattanville with just under two minutes to go gave the Panthers a two player advantage. The Valiant defense was on point for the remainder of the game as they held the Panthers 2-1 for the win.
Grant had six saves on the day while Valiant keeper Lauren Gagnon had nine.
Up next, the Panthers play host to the Rams of Philadelphia on Sunday, September 28 at noon.
