Volleyball Moves Past Mercy, 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to Mercy College on September 23 in the Center for Recreation and Sport. The Panthers dispatched Mercy in three games, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-11 to pick up a 3-0 win. The victory raises Adelphi's overall record to 11-4, and 3-1 in the ECC, while Mercy falls to 4-9 and 0-4 in conference action.

The Panthers moved out to an early 7-2 lead in the first game, on the strength of Amy Williams serves and two kills from Kathleen Carney. From there Adelphi stretched the lead to 13-4, before Mercy closed to within, 18-9 before falling 25-14.

The second game was much closer as Mercy played Adelphi relatively even, knotting the game at 11. The Panthers slipped ahead, 12-11 on a Maverick attack error and then took control on a Hilary Pavels kill that made the score 18-14 on the way to a 25-21 win.

Adelphi left no doubt in the third and final game as the Panthers took an early 4-0 lead thanks to two more Carney kills. Adelphi kept the pressure on, pushing their lead to 11-4 on a Kelsey Hackett kill that results in a Mercy timeout. The Mavericks rallied late, pulling to within four, 13-9, before the Panthers ripped off 12 of the next 14 points including a match ending kill by Harkins.

Carney led the Panther attack with a game high 15 kills, while Pavels chipped in nine kills and nine digs. Williams collected a game high 21 digs, while Heather Mau handed out 37 assists and landed three service aces.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, September 27 when they travel to West Haven, Connecticut for a 1:00 pm meeting with New Haven.
