Field Hockey Tops Drew For First Win

Sept. 20, 2008

Box Score

Madison, NJ - A quick Adelphi response to a late Drew goal gave the Panthers their first win of the season, 2-1, this afternoon. The Rangers tied the score at 1-1 with just over three minutes to play, but sophomore Crystal Gray tallied the game-winning goal just over a mintue later. Adelphi improves to 1-2, while Drew falls to 5-3.

The Panthers took the lead with 13 minutes left in the half off a corner. Sophomore Crystal Gray played the insert to freshman Ornella Schneider who stopped for freshman Jeanette Heimerle. Heimerle blasted towards the far post where Laura Stafford stood to tip in with ease.

The Rangers had a great chance later in the half, but again Stafford made the big play. Elizabeth Law received a pass standing in front of goal and cleverly tipped through the keeper for what seemed to be a goal. Unfortunately for Drew, Stafford was there to clear away the danger with a defensive save.

Drew's defense kept things close through the first ten minutes of the second half as both Delia Barr, Hannah Rau and Stacie Brown all made nice plays in or around the circle.

Drew's offense came to life a bit with Law getting denied again by a defensive save after a series of corners for Drew beginning a frustrating stretch for the Rangers. A later corner led to two more blistered shots from the point, but two more saves from the Panther keeper. The next corner saw Law's deflected shot knocked out by Schneider's defenseive save. The rebound was swept clear by Grant in goal. Law's tough day continued as Schneider was in the right spot again to clear off the line.

The Rangers finally did get their goal late in the game. Kati Eggert inserted a corner to Law which she sent it into the corner of the goal with just 3:42 left to play.

The tie was shortlived though. Off a corner, the initial shot was stuffed by a Drew defender, but the ball rolled to middle where Heimerle slashed at it. The wayward shot found Gray at the far post where she knocked in the goal just about a minute after the Rangers had tied it up.

Freshman Jacqueline Grant had two saves for the Panthers, while Lauren Fasano had four.

The win is Adelphi's first in 25 years. The Panthers resumed varsity status this season and after a pair of losses earlier this year beat Drew for their first win.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, September 23, as they host Ramapo College at 4:00 p.m.
