The Panthers played host to East Coast Conference opponent Molloy College on Thursday night, September 18 in the teams' first meeting of the season. The Panthers didn't give the Lions much of a chance as they capitalized on kill attempts and minimized errors while Molloy struggled to match the effort. Adelphi swept the match 25-9, 25-17, 25-15 and with the win, improves to 10-4, 2-1 ECC while Molloy falls to 3-6, 1-3 ECC.
In the first set, with the score knotted at two early on, the Panthers went on a six point run before a timeout by Molloy temporarily slowed their momentum. After the Lions put up two more points, junior Audrey Goss sparked yet another Adelphi run of four points to extend the lead to 13. The set was closed out on a service ace by junior Amy Williams.
The second set began and both teams remained close through the early stages. The Panthers put up five unanswered points to break a 6-6 tie, but Molloy responded with a four point run of their own. Halted by a time out, the Panthers went on to capture seven of the next eight points to give them a comfortable seven point lead and eventually take the set 25-17.
In the final set, the Panthers continued to dominate as they hit .341 with 17 kills and just three errors while the Lions only posted a .094 kill percentage and committed six errors resulting in a game ending score of 25-15. Adelphi proved too much for Molloy behind the power of senior Kathleen Carney, who registered a game high 12 kills while Goss posted 10. Sophomore Heather Mau recorded a game high 35 assists and three service aces. As a team, the Panthers hit .348 and racked up 42 kills on the night.
Adelphi volleyball returns to action when they play host to Mercy College in a conference matchup on September 23 at 7:00 pm.
