Manhattan, New York -
Adelphi volleyball traveled to Pace University to take on the Setters in a non-conference matchup on September 16. The Panthers took an early lead, won the first set and never looked back as they swept the Setters 25-16, 25-19 and 25-16. With the win, Adelphi advances to 9-4, 1-1 ECC while Pace falls to 6-4.
In the first set, the Panthers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead on a kill by sophomore Hillary Pavels and then went on a 6-2 run in the latter stages of the match to build a 20-13 lead. The Setters would only manage another three points before the Panthers would put the match away. The second set proved closer as both teams battled with neither side getting ahead by more than two points. With the score knotted at 11, the Panthers were sparked by a Patawe Simms kill that resulted in 4-0 run. The Setters closed the gap to two on two occasions, but would get no closer as the Panthers took the second set.
In the final set, after the score reached 6-6, the Panthers began to pull away and never relinquished the lead. With the match nearing the end, the nine point deficit faced by the Setters proved to be too much to overcome as Adelphi took the win.
Pace was led by Sianna Johnson who registered eight kills while teammate Stephanie Kazmiercza had 15 digs. The Panther offense was led by Pavels who had a game high 10 kills while seniors Kathleen Carney and Samantha Johnston chipped in with eight kills each. Junior Amy Williams posted 12 digs on the night and sophomore setter Heather Mau recorded a game high 35 assists.
The Panthers return to action when they play host to the Lions of Molloy College in an ECC matchup on Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 pm.
