Panthers Come up Short Against Kutztown, 3-1

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi field hockey team played their second home game of the season against the Golden Bears of Kutztown University. The Bears scored two goals within two minutes of each other and headed into the second half with the lead. Adelphi struck back to cut the lead in half, but would eventually give up another goal, dropping the match 3-1. With the loss the Panthers drop to 0-2 while Kutztown advances to 5-1 on the season.

The first 20 minutes of the game remained scoreless until the Bears struck first in the 21st minute on goal by Breah Kinney, assisted by Whitney Stum. 1:32 later, Carrie Healey slipped one past freshman goalie Jacqueline Grant to put the Bears up 2-0. The Panthers were out-shot 12-4 as they were held scoreless heading into the half.

12:04 into second half, freshman Julianne Gerbino, assisted by fellow freshman Jeanette Heimerle, notched Adelphi's first goal. The Panthers were stopped there while the Bears netted another goal with just under 17:00 left in play by Kelley Healey, assisted by Carrie Healey, to put them up 3-1 for the win.

Grant made 12 saves in her collegiate debut, while Kutztown goalie Melissa Watson made five.

Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, September 14 when they travel to New Jersey to take on the Rutgers Club team in an exhibition game. The match will start at noon.
