Volleyball Blanks NYIT, 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to East Coast Conference opponent NYIT in the Panthers new Center for Recreation and Sport on September 11. The Panthers trailed in games one and three but were able to pull out the straight set victory, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-19. With the win Adelphi improves to 8-2 overall and evens their ECC record at 1-1, while NYIT falls to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in ECC action.

NYIT came out strong, working their way to a 10-7 lead and then stretching the bulge to 14-7 on a kill by Ali Falbo. At that point in the first set Adelphi came alive, ripping off 10 of the next 12 points to claim a 17-16 lead on a Hilary Pavels kill. The Panthers kept the pressure on out scoring the Bears, 8-4 down the stretch for a 25-20 win in game one.

The Panthers took control of game two early, leading 9-6 after Jennifer McKenna notched an ace. From there Adelphi used a three-point run and a seven-point run to put the game away and claim a 25-18 win.

Game three saw the Bears rebound, taking a 3-0 lead early on the way to a 7-3 lead thanks to a Nina Cicero kill. Adelphi responded with four straight points to knot the game at seven, capped by a Pavels kill. With the game knotted at 10, Adelphi took two points or more from NYIT on five occasions to secure a 25-19 win.

Falbo and Cicero led the Bears with nine kills each, while Emily Seyers and Shelby Klein chipped in seven digs. Seyers also added 22 assists.

Pavels led the Panther attack with 11 kills, while Samantha Johnston collected 10 and added six digs and two service aces. Heather Mau posted a game-high 36 assists to go along with her six digs, while Amy Williams led all players with 11 digs.

Adelphi returns to action on Friday, September 12 when they travel to Oakdale, New York to take on #2 Washburn at 3:00 pm.
