The Adelphi University women's volleyball team traveled to Gaffney, South Carolina to compete in the Limestone Labor Day tournament on August 28 and 29. The Panthers posted wins over Elizabeth City State and host Limestone on day one and then followed that up with wins over Fort Valley State and Southern Wesleyan on the second day. The early success gives Adelphi a perfect 4-0 record.
Elizabeth City State:
Adelphi women's volleyball opened up the tournament against the Vikings of Elizabeth City State. The Panthers took the first two sets (25-15, 25-21). The Vikings managed to muscle out a third set win (23-25), but fell in the fourth set 25-14. The Panthers were led by senior Samantha Johnston (18 kills), junior Amy Williams (25 digs) and sophomore Heather Mau (45 assists).
Limestone College:
The second match of the day was against Host Limestone College. The match ended quickly in three sets as the Panthers collected their second win of the season. Johnston registered nine kills and 27 digs and Mau had 38 assists. Also leading the Panthers was senior Kathleen Carney who had 10 kills and freshman Hilary Pavels who had 10 kills and 14 digs.
Fort Valley State:
The second day of the tournament started with a match against the Wildcats of Fort Valley State. The Panthers took the first set 25-14, but the Wildcats answered back by winning the second set 21-25. The next two sets went to the Panthers (25-22, 25-19) as they took the win. Johnston led the attack with 12 kills while Mau picked up 33 assists and junior Amy Williams registering 17 digs.
Southern Wesleyan:
Rounding out the tournament on the second and final day, the Adelphi women's volleyball team faced the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan. The first set proved to be an exciting one as both teams fought hard with Adelphi coming out on top 31-29. The Warriors would not recover, dropping the next two sets (25-16, 25-21), allowing the Panthers to take the match in three sets. Pavels and junior Kelsey Hackett led the charge, posting 13 and 10 kills respectively. Mau registered 42 assists while junior Jennifer McKenna picked up 18 digs.
Sophomore Hilary Pavels and senior Samantha Johnston were each named to the all-tournament team
