Lanigan Leads Adelphi Past Dowling In ECC First Round

Brookhaven, N.Y. - No.6 Adelphi upsets #3 Dowling in the first round of the ECC Tournament at Golden Lions Field. With the win, Adelphi improves to 24-23 on the year and advances to the second round, double elimination tournament starting Friday and will take on #2 New Haven at 11:00 am. Dowling falls to 28-17 and will await their fate for the NCAA regional, announced Sunday.

The story of the game was Adelphi starting pitcher Bobby Lanigan (Staten Island, NY) who threw nine scoreless innings, scattering 3 hits and striking out seven walking only one. Adelphi got on the board first in the 5th. With one out, centerfielder Mike Testani (Williston Park, NY) doubled over the leftfielder's head and would later score on a Pat O'Neil (Oakville,CT) triple past the lunge of right fielder Frank Intagliata (Franklin Square, NY). O'Neil would come home on a Mike Colonna (Staten Island, NY) single up the middle to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead, more than enough for Lannigan.

Adelphi would add an insurance run in the 8th on a Ryan Boelsen (Garden City, NY) RBI single off first baseman Kevin Korte's (Port Jefferson Station, NY) glove.

For the Golden Lions, Brent Lotito (Miller Place, NY) threw his 6th complete game of the season getting the loss and dropping to 6-4 on the year. Lotito struck out seven Panthers in his last home start.
