The Adelphi University women's lacrosse outscored #10 the University of New Haven, 9-1, in the second half en route to a 18-5 conference victory this afternoon. The Panthers, ranked No.4 in the latest IWLCA/Under Armour DII National Poll, improve to 6-0 and 2-0 in the ECC. The Chargers drop to 8-2, 3-2 in the league.
Freshman Michelle Ceraso led all scorers with four goals, along with one assist. Senior Rachel Ray tallied seven points in the win with two goals and five assists.
Senior Megan Metelenis scored the first goal at 26:06. Metelenis assisted on the next play as Ceraso made it 2-0, in the sixth minute. The Chargers rattled off back-to-back goals to knot the score at four at 20:08. Sophomore Allison Tumulty scored the game-winner at 18:05 on a feed from Ray to put the Panthers up for good. Adelphi scored three more goals before UNH closed the gap with consecutive goals, 6-4, at 10:36. Metelenis tallied her third goal of the half at 10:24 on an assist from freshman Kaitlyn Carter. Ceraso accounted for the final two goals of the half, including a free position shot with 52 seconds remaining.
Adelphi exploded in the second stanza with nine unanswered goals over the next 28 minutes. Sophomore Holly Burke used the first two of her three goals to open the half. Carter added two more with Ray and Ceraso also scoring again. Sophomore Danielle Kafarski chipped in a goal at 3:55 on a feed from Ray and sophomore Corinne Pingitore made it 18-4 at 2:45. The Chargers managed to slip one shot past sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Fitzpatrick with 25 seconds left in the contest.
Fitzpatrick collected 15 saves in the contest on 27 shots faced. Shannon Greenwood made 16 stops for New Haven.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, as they travel to Waltham, Massachusetts to take on Bentley College at 1:00 p.m.
