The Adelphi University softball team swept Dowling College, taking game one, 5-0, and holding off the Golden Lions 18-13 in game two to finish the regular season. The Panthers improve to 37-17 and 17-3 in the ECC. Dowling drops to 27-28 and 9-11 in the conference.
The Panthers got on the board early in the first inning with a leadoff single and back to back doubles to score senior Dely Francisco at the plate before Dowling recorded their first out. An RBI single to centerfield by junior Jessica Vogt and a freshman Deirdre White sac fly would give the Panthers a three run lead. To close out the inning, Vogt, scored on the throw for a 4-0 Panther hold over the Golden Lions. Adelphi picked up a run in the top of the second with a Vogt RBI single to left field for a five run cushion.
Senior Julie Schaper (18-2) recorded the two-hitter, striking out eight and walking two.
The Panthers jumped on the board again in the bottom of the first connecting on four hits. Vogt, hit a three run homer with two outs on the board to give the Panthers a 3-0 hold. The Golden Lions closed the three run gap with a sacrifice fly to right field by Jackie Hannan to score Kacie Pinto at the plate. Adelphi broke open the score with a five run inning in the top of the second. Vogt smacked Adelphi's second three-run homer of the game for a 8-1 cushion. Pinto cracked a two run RBI double to the left field line in the bottom of second and Keri Boystak added a three-run homer to centerfield to inch within two of Adelph.
The Panthers added two more runs in the third for a 10-6 lead over the Golden Lions. With two outs on the board, Plochochi, smacked down an RBI single and Pinto added an RBI single up the middle to inch within two of Adelph'is 10-8 hold, heading into the top of the fourth. Pinch hitter, White, cracked a two run homer over centerfield with two outs on the board for a 13-8 advantage in the top of the sixth. Kristina DeMeo smashed a three-run homer over centerfield to creep within two of Adelphi's hold and Pinto added an RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded to tie the game at 13-13 in the bottom six. In extra innings, Adelphi, scored five runs on two outs in the top of the ninth with Vogt adding her second home run of the game to secure the 18-13 win.
Junior Samantha Johnston went 5-6 with five RBI and four run scored. Senior Diana DiPiano was 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs.
Adelphi brought in four pitchers, with Schaper (19-2) subbing in the sixth then holding Dowling to just three runs, no hits with one strikeout.
The Panthers finish the regular season in second place in the ECC with a 17-3 record. They will await the pairings for the conference tournament scheduled to begin on May 2.
