The Adelphi University baseball team played host to C.W. Post on Wednesday, April 23 in an East Coast Conference match-up on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers trailed 5-1 after six innings and closed the gap to one run in the eighth but could not get any closer, falling 6-5. With the loss Adelphi falls to 18-21 overall and 9-11 in the ECC.
C.W. Post took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and Adelphi responded two innings later, as Thomas Harper grounded out to first, but drove in Rob DeGennaro on the play. The Pioneers countered with a run in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs. DeGennaro drove in the first with a double to left center, while Harper drove in another run when he singled to center. The third run of the inning was driven in on a Mike Testani single.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 6-4 in the top of the eighth and a DeGennaro single pulled Adelphi within one in the bottom of the inning. But that was as close as the Panthers would get, falling 6-5.
DeGennaro had a great day at the plate, going 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Harper was 2-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Mike Bartlett was credited with the loss after throwing 4.1 innings and allowing four runs.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 26 when they travel to Flushing, New York to take on Queens College.
