The Adelphi University baseball team played host to Mercy College on Sunday, April 20 in an East Coast Conference contest. Ryan Boelsen drove in Rob Paccione in the bottom of the eighth, giving Adelphi a 2-1 win. With the victory Adelphi improves to 17-20 overall and 9-10 in conference play.
The game went scoreless for the first four and a half innings before Adelphi struck for a run in the bottom of the fifth on a lead off home run from Chris Weidlein.
The Mavericks responded in the sixth with a run to knot the game at 1-1, setting the stage for Boelsen's heroics. Robert Paccione reached on a bunt base hit with one out in the bottom of the eighth. He then moved all the way to third on a throwing error with one out. Ryan Boelsen followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
Adelphi reliever Mike McLaskey, who entered the game in the seventh, set the Mavericks down in order on three ground balls in the ninth to close it out.
Keith Couch tossed six innings of one run, six hit baseball, striking out eight in the win. McLasky gave Adelphi three innings of hitless, scoreless relief to earn the victory.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, April 22 when they play host to Briarcliffe at 3:30 pm.
