The #3 ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team built up a 16-7 half-time lead en route to a 24-16 victory over Merrimack College this afternoon at Warrior Field. The Panthers (10-0) snap a four-game win streak by the Warriors who fall to 7-3.
Junior Rachel Ray, currently ranks second in Division II in both points and assists per game, tallied three goals and five assists. Four Panthers scored at least three goals, including freshman Michelle Ceraso, who dished out two assists.
Adelphi scored three goals in the first 2:27, including back to back points by sophomore Vanessa Sotcheff. The Panthers tallied the first four goals before Maddie Basile got the Warriors on the board at 5:41. Up 9-4 at 14:53, Corinne Pingitore's unassisted goal sparked a 5-0 run. After two more Merrimack goals, sophomore Brittany Fronczak made it 15-6 on a feed from Ray with 3:05 left in the half.
Freshman Kaitlyn Carter notched her second of three goals in the opening minute of the second half. Then Kelly Pasquantonio scored two of the next three Merrimack goals, 17-10. The Panthers held a slight 7-6 advantage in the remaining 22 minutes, but maintained their sizable margin.
Pasquantonio tallied a game-high seven goals, including her 40th career goal, to lead the Warriors.
Sophomore Caitlin Fitzpatrick recorded 10 saves in 53:38 minutes in goal, with junior Christina Kozakiewicz coming in the final 6:22. Amanda DiNitto had six stops for Merrimack.
Adelphi returns to conference action on Friday, April 18, as they host Regis University at 7:00 p.m.
