The Adelphi University baseball team played host to East Coast Conference (ECC) rival Molloy College on Tuesday, April 1 at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers took a 6-1 lead after three innings and extended that to 13-1 after eight innings in a 13-8 victory. The win raised Adelphi's record to 11-13 overall and 5-3 in the ECC, while Molloy falls to 13-11 overall and 4-4 in conference action.
Adelphi got on the board in the second inning as Matt Kenney singled to right field, scoring Pat O'Neill from third. Thomas Harper followed that up with a two run double down the left field line that brought Chris Weidlein and Mike Mongiello across home plate. Mike Colonna finished up the four run second as he hit into a fielder's choice, bringing Kenney home.
Molloy got one run back in the top of the third, but the Panthers countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 strangle hold on the game. Both runs were scored on a Joe Maranino two run home run that sailed over the left field wall.
Adelphi tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth and three each in the bottom of the seventh and the eighth to enter the ninth with a 13-1 advantage. Molloy mounted a comeback in the top of the ninth, using five hits and taking advantage of three Panther errors to put seven runs on the board, before Teddy Rohrs closed the door with a strikeout.
Mike McLasky earned the win for Adelphi, going eight innings, striking out five and giving up just one run. Harper had a strong day at the plate, going 4-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Weidlein also hit well, going 2-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, April 2 when they play host to Pace at 3:30 pm on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
