The #4 ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team led 14-1 at the half en route to a 20-2 victory over Assumption College on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers improve to 2-0 while the Greyhounds drop to 0-2.
Thirteen different players scored for the Panthers who were led by junior Rachel Ray (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and freshman Michelle Ceraso (Massapequa, N.Y.), each with three goals. Ray also dished out five assists for an eight point effort on the day.
Junior Emily Simpson (Kings Park, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the third minute on a feed from Ray. Fifteen seconds later, Assumption's Sarah Roos scored unassisted, 1-1. Sophomore Holly Burke's (Churchville, Md.) goal on an assist from freshman Kaitlyn Carter (Mineola, N.Y.) spurred a 13-0 Panther run capped by an unassisted goal by sophomore Corinne Pingitore (Jackson, N.J.) with 1:35 left in the half.
Sophomore Allison Tumulty (Rocky Point, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the second time of the day in the opening minutes of the second half, with help from Ray. Four more Panther goals followed to push the lead to 19-1. Roos scored again for the Greyhounds in the 48th minute. Sophomore Alyssa LaBosco (Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season and the last of the day for Adelphi at 54:35.
Sophomore Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Port Washington, N.Y.) recorded the win with four saves in the first half. Junior Christina Kozakiewicz (Ridgewood, N.J.) made four stops in the second half. Lauren Matysiak, who faced 44 shots, had 20 saves for Assumption.
The Panthers return to action next Sunday, March 16, with their season home opener versus Mercyhurst at 1:00 p.m. All home games will take place at Hofstra University.
