The Adelphi University baseball team played host to Dominican College on Tuesday, March 4 in their home opener. The 3:30 pm game marked the first contest held at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers trailed 2-0 after the first inning, but rallied late to pick up a 3-2 win. The victory give Adelphi an overall mark of 1-4, while Dominican remains winless at 0-2.
The Chargers took an early 2-0 lead when a Willie Mann single scored Sean Brown, followed by Tommy Maloney crossing home plate on an Adelphi error. Both runs came in the first inning of play.
Adelphi inched closer in the bottom of the fourth as Rob Paccione led off the inning with a single. Mike Testani came up with one out and Paccione standing on third and hit a deep fly to center that allowed Paccione to score, pulling the Panthers to within one run, 2-1.
Rob DeGennaro opened the bottom of the sixth with a walk and then stole second. Mike Colonna singled and advanced to second on an error that allowed DeGennaro to get across home plate and knot the game up at two.
The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the eighth using the bunt. Bill Melillo led off the inning with a bunt single. DeGennaro followed suit and a catcher error allowed DeGennaro to move to second and Melillo to advance to third. That was all Paccione would need as he singled, scoring Melillo and sealing the Adelphi win.
Keith Couch pitched six strong innings, striking out five and allowing just the two runs, one earned. Jake Potters threw three perfect innings of releif, striking out two and giving up just one hit.
The Panthers return to action on March 7 when they play host to Franklin Pierce at 3:00 pm on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
