Baseball Falls to Caldwell, 2-1 in Extra Innings

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team played host to Caldwell College on Friday, March 28 in a non-conference match-up on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers knocked in a run in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game at one, but fell in extra innings, 2-1. The loss drops Adelphi to 9-11 overall, while Caldwell improves to 6-8.

The Cougars got on the board in the second inning on a Jorge Torres single to center that brought home Adric Saxon. The Panthers responded in the bottom of the sixth when Mike Connors ripped a ball to the Caldwell shortstop, who bobbled it, allowing Connors to reach first and Mike Colonna to cross home plate.

The game remained 1-1, for the next three innings, forcing a tenth frame. In the tenth Caldwell had runners on first and second with two outs. Andrew Robertson drew a controversal walk, which allowed Tommy Murphy to reach home amid the confusion, giving Caldwell what would prove to be a 2-1 win.

Eric Hines went the distance for the Cougars, striking out six and allowing just seven hits. Mike Bartlett threw seven strong innings for Adelphi, giving up just four hits and striking out six. Frank Valeriano threw 2.2 innings of relief, striking out three to keep Adelphi in the game.

Mike Mongiello was 2-2 at the plate for Adelphi, while Rob DeGennaro went 1-3.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they travel to Oakdale, New York for a doubleheader against Dowling College.
