Freshman Kaitlyn Carter poured in eight goals along with one assist to lead the #5 Adelphi University women's lacrosse past St. Thomas Aquinas, 22-9. The Panthers improve to 5-0 and 1-0 in the East Coast Conference.
Junior Rachel Ray also tallied nine points in the win, with four goals and five assists. Senior Megan Metelenis added two goals and two assists.
The Panthers opened on a 7-0 run, with sophomore Danielle Kafarski scoring first just 52 seconds into play on a feed from sophomore Holly Burke. Carter picked up three goals in the rally, which also included goals from Metelenis and sophomores Allison Tumulty and Vanessa Sotcheff. The Spartans rattled off back-to-back goals to get on board. Junior Emily Simpson scored unassisted in the 17th minute before STAC picked up two more points. Adelphi closed out the half with four unanswered goals, 12-4.
After trading goals in the opening minutes of the second half, Carter accounted for four of the next seven Panther goals to push the lead to 20-5. STAC found the back of the net for three straight goals, 20-8. Ray accounted for the final two Adelphi goals in the last two minutes of play.
Sophomore Caitlin Fitzpatrick recorded the win, making two stops in the first half. Junior Christina Kozakiewicz also tallied two saves in the second half.
Adelphi returns to action next Saturday, April 5, as they take on the University of New Haven at 1:00 p.m
