Softball Takes Two From New Haven

March 26, 2008

Game One|Game Two

West Haven, CT - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to West Haven, Connecticut on Tuesday, March 25 to take on East Coast Conference opponent New Haven. The Panthers held New Haven scoreless in the first contest, 2-0 and then out hit the Chargers, 11-5, completing the sweep with a 9-4 win. With the wins Adelphi improves to 8-10 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while New Haven falls to 5-7 and 0-2 in the ECC.

Game One

The Panthers took advantage of two New Haven errors in the first inning to get on the board, 1-0. An error by the Charger short stop allowed Katie Brophy to cross the plate. After a scoreless bottom of the first, Adelphi tacked on a second run in the top of the second on another Charger error.

That was more then enough run support for Julie Schaper, who threw seven innings, giving up just three hits, while striking out six and walking three.

Game Two

Adelphi opened the second game fast as Dely Francisco singled to start the first inning and then stole second. Francisco moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then was driven home on a Diana DiPiano home run along with Jessica Vogt, giving the Panthers a 3-0 edge.

The Panthers tacked on one run in both the second and third innings and then put the game out of reach with four in the fourth. Three of the four runs came home on a Brophy single to left and the fourth crossed the plate courtesy of a Samantha Johnston single.

Samantha Tilton pitched three innings for the win, giving up just one hit and allowing no runs. Leighann Bell threw four innings of relief, giving up four runs on four hits, striking out one.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 when they play host to Dominican College at 3:00 pm.
