The Adelphi University baseball team played host to Molloy College on Wednesday, March 26 in an East Coast Conference match-up on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers took a 6-0 lead into the third, but were held scoreless the rest of the way, falling 11-6. The loss drops Adelphi to 9-10 overall and 3-1 in ECC play, while Molloy improves to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Adelphi came out swinging, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Mike Colonna reached on a triple and was driven home by Ryan Boelsen. Mike Mongiello drove in the other two runs on a single to right, giving the Panthers an early 3-0 lead.
The Panthers put up three more runs in the bottom of the second, the first on a Boelsen sacrifice fly to right. Two batters later Pat O'Neill came up and smacked a two-run home run to give Adelphi a six run cushion after just two innings.
Molloy got one run back in the third and then erupted in the fourth, scoring six runs on four hits to take a 7-6 lead. Molloy tacked on another run in the fifth and then put the game out of reach with a run in the seventh and two in the ninth.
Boelsen, O'Neill and Mongiello each had two RBI and Colonna had the best day at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs scored.
Adelphi returns to action on Friday, March 28 when they host Caldwell at 3:30 pm on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
