Junior Rachel Ray tallied four goals, while dishing out six assists to lead the #4 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 22-7 win over Georgian Court University. The Panthers improve to 4-0, while the Lions fall to 2-2.
Ray put the Panthers on top early on with an unassisted effort in the third minute. Thirty seconds later, senior Megan Metelenis scored the first of her four goals on an assist by Vanessa Sotcheff. Sophomore Danielle Kafarski followed with the first of her four goals at 26:24. GCU's Allison Abbate made it a 3-1 game at 24:37. The Panthers responded with six unanswered goals, two by sophomore Allison Tumulty, to push the lead to 11-3 with 11:16 left in the first half. Both team traded goals over the next seven minutes. Freshman Michelle Ceraso scored the second of her three goals at 4:22. GCU rattled off two quick goals in the last minute of play as the Panthers held an 11-5 lead at intermission.
Sophomore Holly Burke opened the second half with the first of her two goals on a feed by Sotcheff as the Panthers outscored GCU 5-1 over the next 10 minutes, 16-6. GCU scored its final goal of the game in the 43rd minute as Adelphi surged ahead on a 6-0 run.
In a physical contest which saw a combined nine yellow cards handed out, Adelphi held 34-20 shot advantage. Sophomore Caitlin Fitzpatrick recorded her fourth win of the season with seven saves in 49:28 minutes in goal. Junior Christina Koazkiewicz held the Lions scoreless in the final 11:32 of play, making two saves.
Ray's 10 points ties the Adelphi single game points record set by Diana Lopez on May 3, 2005 versus New Haven. Her six assists also ties the school record which has been matched by several players.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, March 27, at St. Thomas Aquinas for its first conference game of the season.
