Adelphi Women Stumble At STAC, 61-41

Feb. 9, 2008

Box Score

Sparkill, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered a tough, 61-41, conference loss at the hands of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium. The Panthers fall to 10-11 on the season and 8-6 in the ECC.

STAC scored first, but a three-pointer by junior Jasmine Travers gave Adelphi the early lead. It remained a two-point game throughout most of the first half, including seven ties, the last, 20-20, at 6:16. Then the Panthers went cold, missing their final seven shots from the field to allow the Lady Spartans to surge ahead on a 15-3 rally. The final points came from junior Serita Lee who went 3-for-3 from the foul line with no time on the clock. STAC held comfortable 35-23 lead as both teams headed to the locker room.

The Panthers opened the second half on a 7-3 run to close to within six points, 38-32, on a jumper from junior Danielle Parks with 13:29 remaining. But that would prove to be as close as Adelphi would get as they struggled from the field, connecting on just 7-of-28, or 25 percent. The Lady Spartans closed on a 23-9 run to cruise to victory.

Adelphi was plagued by turnovers, committing 29 in the contest. Senior Mary Lepore was the only Panther in double-digits with 15 points to go along with six rebounds. Adelphi kept it close on the boards (36-37) with Lee pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds.

STAC was led by Takiyah Ingram with 24 points. Theresa Dowling chipped in 14 points off the bench.

Adelphi returns to action this Wednesday, February 13, as they host Mercy College at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers will be looking to avenge an early season lost to the Mavericks.

As part of the team's season long promotional efforts, they will celebrate Valentine's Day by giving out roses to all women prior to tip-off, while supplies last.
