Late Rally Lifts Adelphi Women Past Dowling, 70-65

Oakdale, N.Y. - Down by as much as 14 points in the second half, the Adelphi University women's basketball team used a 24-5 run to overcome Dowling College, 70-65, on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers win their second straight on the road to improve to 13-12 on the season and 11-7 in the ECC.

Adelphi boasted five players in double figures, led by junior Lisa Manetta (Glendale, N.Y.) with 17 points, including five from three-point range. Junior Jasmine Travers (Gaiterburg, Md.) had an impressive day, collecting 12 points, eight rebounds and a career-best seven assists. Senior Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) also had 12 points, while junior Serita Lee (Freeport, N.Y.) and Danielle Parks (Galloway, N.J.) chipped in 10 points piece.

The Panthers built up a five point lead early in the first half, but the Lions went ahead on a layup by Nikkeia Daniels at 8:53. Adelphi kept it close on a jumper by Travers with 4:10 to go, but Dowling pulled away for a 33-27 half-time advantage.

Adelphi made it a two-point game in the opening minutes of the second half, before Dowling surged ahead on an 11-2 run. Back-to-back Panther three-pointers were answered by the same from the Lions as they extended their lead to 14 points, 51-37, with 13:56 remaining. Dowling responded to Adelphi shot for shot until the 10 minute mark when Parks hit two free throws at 9:53 to spark the Panthers late run. Smith's layup with 42 seconds remaining put Adelphi up for good.

The Panthers were 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the second stanza, including the last four points of the game. Adelphi dominated the boards, outrebounding Dowling 46-29. Lee pulled down 17 rebounds for the Panthers.

Shanasia Franklin and Kristina Mitchell had 14 points each for Dowling. Molly Turbridy added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Adelphi returns to the comforts of Woodruff Hall where they will finish out the regular season with games against Bridgeport and C.W. Post. The Panthers will host the Purple Knights first on Wednesday, February 27 at 5:30 p.m.
