The Adelphi men's basketball team traveled to Oakdale, New York on Saturday, February 23 to take on East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Dowling College. The Panthers built a 37-24 halftime lead, but had to hold off a late charge from Dowling to secure a 68-64 win. With the victory Adelphi improves to 16-9 overall and 12-6 in the ECC.
The first seven minutes of action was a back and forth affair as Adelphi managed just a four point lead, before Dowling rallied back to knot the game at 11. From there the Panthers used a 9-1 run, that was capped off by a Pat Luptowski three-pointer with 7:59 left in the first to give Adelphi a 20-12 edge.
The Golden Lions ralled back to cut the lead to three, 22-19 with 6:09 left. However the Panthers were not done, closing the half with a 15-5 run to enter the locker room with a 37-24 bulge.
Adelphi pushed their lead to 14 points on three occasions in the second half, the last of which came with 12:07 on the clock and was courtesy of a Luptowski bucket that made the score 51-37. Dowling used a 9-2 run to cut the margin to 53-46, with 8:09 left in the game.
The Panthers pushed the lead to back to double digits, 62-52, on a Matt Pink foul shot, but the Golden Lions would not go away, responding with a 8-2 spurt to pull to within four points, 64-60, with 1:25 left to play. Dowling continued to creep closer, using a Genc Selimi score to it a twoo-point game, 66-64, with 23 ticks left on the clock.
However, two foul shots from Alvin Vivican with 21 seconds left on the clock gave the Panthers a 68-64 victory.
David Seagers led all players with 20 points and six rebounds. Selimi and James St. Roberts posted double doubles for Dowling with 11 points and 13 and 12 rebounds respectively.
Richard Byrd led the way for the Panthers, putting up 16 points and adding 11 rebounds. Both Pink and Sky Khaleel chipped in 13 points, while Khaleel pulled down six rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 27, playing host to the University of Bridgeport at 7:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
