The Adelphi University women's basketball suffered a 78-61 conference loss to the University of New Haven on Saturday evening at Woodruff Hall. The Chargers improve to 16-8 and 16-1 in the ECC, while the Panthers fall to 11-12 and 8-8.
Senior Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) led all players with 19 points along with five rebounds. Senior Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) moved into the number two all-time spot on Adelphi's career scoring record with a 13 point effort. Junior Serita Lee (Freeport, N.Y.) had 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.
Adelphi could not stop a hot offense by New Haven, which shot 51.5 percent from the field in the first half. The Chargers, who led by as much as 31 points and hit 7-of-9 from beyond the arc, built up a 46-23 half-time lead.
The Panthers challenged the Chargers in the second half, outscoring them 38-32, but it was not enough to close the substantial gap.
New Haven was led by Natasha Pierre-Louise with 15 points and seven boards. Helin Marte chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Smith surpassed former teammate, Carlyshia Hurdle '06 (1465) in scoring total and now boasts 1,476 career points. She is just 43 points away from tying the all-time Adelphi scoring total of 1,519 set by Kendra Koneski in 1996.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 20, as they travel to Flushing, New York to take on Queens College at 5:30 p.m.
