Men's Basketball Knocks Off New Haven, 66-50

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's basketball team played host to the University of New Haven on Saturday, February 16. The Panthers held the Chargers to just 18 first half points, building a 28-18 halftime lead on the way to a 66-50 win. The victory gives Adelphi a record of 14-9 overall and 10-6 in East Coast Conference play, while New Haven falls to 10-14 overall and 6-11 in conference action.

Adelphi held New Haven to just two points in the first five and a half minutes of play, moving out to a 9-2 lead. The Chargers battled back over the next seven minutes to knot the game at 16 on a Darryl Greene three-pointer. However a Richard Byrd three-pointer sparked a 12-2 run that gave the Panthers a 28-18 halftime edge.

As the second half opened Adelphi got a lay-up from Mike McDuffie, a jumper from Chris Diasparra and three Byrd free throws to extend their lead to 15 points, 35-20 with 16:39 to play. The Panthers would take a 17 point lead, 40-23, with 14:00 to play on a Sky Khaleel three-point play. New Haven would not get any closer then 12, the rest of the way as Adelphi pulled out a 66-50 win.

Greene led New Haven with 16 points, while Cassius Chaney chipped in 14 points and six rebounds.

Adelphi placed three players in double figures, led by Byrd's 18 points and eight rebounds. Alvin Vivican added 17 points, while Sky Khaleel contributed 14.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, February 20 when they travel to Flushing, New York for a 7:30 pm meeting with Queens.
