Despite outscoring their host Pace University, 42-35, in the second half, the Adelphi University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a first half deficit, falling 75-65. The Setters improve to 4-2, while the Panthers fall to 4-2.
Sophomore Ashley Caiafa led the Panthers with 16 points and five rebounds. Senior Serita Lee also had 16 points with four rebounds. Freshman Theresa Foley tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
Pace dominated from the tip-off, opening on a 16-9 run. The Panthers closed to within one, 16-15, on a lay-up by Lee at 9:43, but the Setters rallied with 10 unanswered points. Adelphi struggled from the field over the remaining minutes, hitting just 1-of-6 from the field. Pace led by as much as 19, 40-21, on two made free throws by Laura Mooney with 36 seconds left until half-time.
The Setters lead balloned to 23 points midway through the second half, 57-34. A bucket by senior Lisa Manetta sparked a 12-0 rally to close the gap to 11, 57-46, with 7:40 left in regulation. However, it wasn't until the one minute mark that the Panthers cracked the double digit lead.
Pace had four players in double figures led by Lisa Welsome with 13 points. Brittany Shields added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Adelphi returns to conference action on Wednesday, December 10, as they travel to NYIT for a 5:30 pm contest.
