The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to East Coast Conference opponent Queens College on Sunday, December 7. The Panthers held the Knights to 26 percent shooting, building a 37-24 halftime lead on the way to a 76-53 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 4-2 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 2-0, while Queens falls to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in ECC action.
The initial feeling out period lasted a bit longer then usual as Adelphi and Queens combine to score 18 points (9-9) in the first 7:40 of the game. However, the Panthers found a rythmn as a Richard Byrd triple sparked a 15-2 run that included a second Byrd three and was capped by a Norron McDonald lay-up, giving Adelphi a 24-13 edge.
From there the Panthers would increase their lead to as many as 14 points, 35-21, courtesy of two Steffon Farley free throws, before entering the locker room with a 37-24 cushion.
Queens kept the Panthers in check early, but with 14:09 left to play and the score 46-32, Byrd sparked another Adelphi run. This time the Panthers out scored Queens 14-1 over a five minute stretch, capped by a Byrd three-point play, giving the Adelphi a 27 points bulge, 60-33.
The Knights kept fighting, pulling to within 20 points, 73-53, with 2:01 left on a Khaleef Allicott, but another Byrd triple 21 seconds later gave Adelphi a winning score of 76-53.
Lamont Lans led the Knights with 13 points, while Allicott chipped in 12. Terrell Simmons led Queens with 11 rebounds.
The Panthers placed four players in double figures, led by Byrd's 20 points and six rebounds. Farley also had a strong game scoring 14 points (6-9 FG) and pulling down 13 rebounds, while David Akinyooye added 12 points and nine rebounds and Alvin Vivican chipped in 11 points and four assists.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, December 10 when they travel to Westbury, New York for a 7:15 pm meeting with NYIT.
