Senior Serita Lee registered 22 points and 17 rebounds, but it was not enough to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team overcome host Caldwell College, 70-61, on Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars improve to 3-4, while the Panthers fall to 5-3.
Caldwell opened on an 11-0 run through the first five minutes of play. Sophomore Ashley Caiafa recorded five of her 12 points in the 17-6 Adelphi rally. Junior Caitlin Wetmore's bucket tied the game at 11:03, however the Cougars maintained the lead, pulling ahead, 26-19, at 5:10 on a three-pointer by Abena George. The Panthers again rallied, tying the game for the second time on a jumper by senior Lisa Manetta, 26-26, with 3:11 left in the half. The Cougars pulled ahead by four, but Panthers stayed close, knotting the score at 30 on a layup by freshman Theresa Foley as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
The Panthers took a 36-34 lead in the opening minutes of the second half on a jumper by Lee at 16:57. Caldwell kept it close, tying the game for the sixth time, 44-44 at 12:21. The Cougars pulled ahead by eight, 57-49, at 6:06. Adelphi never got closer than four points as Caldwell held on for the win, 70-61.
Caldwell had four players in double-digits, led by MacKenzie Lynch with 22 points and 15 boards. Kristy Leedham had 17 points, while Kaitlyn Lambert and Lynea Blue chipped in 10 points a piece.
The Panthers return to action next Saturday, December 20, as they travel to the University of New Haven for a 2:00 pm contest.
