The #2 Adelphi University women's soccer team fell to #3 the University of Bridgeport, 2-1, in the semi-final round of the East Coast Conference Tournament this afternoon on the campus of C.W. Post. The Purple Knights (16-3-1) advance to Sunday's final, while the Panthers drop to 14-4-1.
UB struck first, opening a 1-0 lead in the fifth mintue of play as Emma Woolley scored on a ten yard shot that deflected off freshman goalie Dorothy Connolly and into the net. Junior Caitlin Morrison knotted the score on a rebound shot at 18:17 on a feed from junior Kayte Kinsley. The Purple Knights held an 8-5 shot advantage in the first half, but Connolly stopped four shots on goal to keep the score 1-1 at the half.
Bridgeport's 6-3 shot advantage made the difference in the second half. Marie Biondi tallied the game-winner at 50:31 with an assist from Marie Pettersson to seal the win.
Connolly finished with five saves on the afternoon while Bridgeport's Elina Yletyinen was unchallenged.
The Purple Knights will take on #1 C.W. Post on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers, ranked #8 nationally, knocked off Dowling, 1-0 to advance. The winner will receive an automatic NCAA qualification.
Adelphi, which ranked 4th in the latest East Region poll, must await the NCAA selection show to determine if they will receive a tournament berth. The regional first and second rounds are scheduled for November 14 and 16 with campus sites to be determined.
