Adelphi University topped St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-1, in women's soccer action this afternoon. The Panthers wrap up the regular season with a 14-3-1 overall record and 7-1-1 in the ECC to clinch the #2 spot in the ECC Tournament.
Adelphi dominated the first half, holding an 11-2 shot advantage. The Panthers tallied the first goal in the 24th minute as a corner shot and subsequent header was pushed back out by STAC only to be tapped in by sophomore Annie Braseth. Seven minutes later freshman Danielle Bottaro scored what would be the game-winner on an assist by senior Amanda Rodriguez. Sophomore Emily Dunne collected the first of her two goals in the 35th minute as she blasted a shot from 10-feet out past the STAC goalie. She then followed this up with an assisted corner kick from senior Elise Maniguet at 41:54.
Sophomore Kim Volinksi had the last word for the Panthers early in the second half, scoring an unassisted goal just outside the box at 50:35. The Spartans managed one goal, ending the Panthers shutout streak at eight as Liz Grondolt chipped in the ball into the corner.
Freshman Dorothy Connolly made two saves in the first half to record the win, while sophmore Angela Matinale appeared for the final 38 minutes. STAC's Cynthia Campion had six stops in the contest.
The Panthers finish the regular season ranked second in the league and will take the #2 spot into the ECC Tournament slated to begin this Friday, November 7. Adelphi will face #3 the University of Bridgeport at 11:30 a.m. Top seed C.W. Post will host the tournament and will take on #4 Dowling College at 2:00 p.m. The finals will take place on Sunday, November 9 at 1:00 p.m.
