Women's Basketball Tops Queens, 80-71

Garden City, N.Y. - Freshman Ashley Caiafa poured in 18 of her 24 points in the second half to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team past Queens College this afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sports. The Panthers improve to 3-0 and 1-0 in the East Coast Conference, while the Knights drop to 2-2 and 0-1 in the league.

Senior Serita Lee tallied her third double-double with 14 points and a game-high 17 boards. Senior Lisa Manetta added 17 points and four assists.

The Knights took control early, opening up a six point lead through 10:41. They maintained the distance for most of the half, but with four minutes remaining, the Panthers began to close the gap. Manetta's three-pointer with just over a minute remaining kept Adelphi ahead as they took a 36-29 lead into the locker room.

The Panthers realized their largest lead, 42-31, at 18:24, on another three-pointer by Manetta. The Knights rallied back on a 16-5 run to knot the score at 47 with 11:25 on the clock. Queens took the lead on a trifecta by Amanda Bartlett at 8:45 then pulled ahead by six points, 58-52 at the 6:41 mark. Adelphi kept it close and regained the lead on a basket by Manetta with 1:27 left in regulation. The Panthers went 7-for-8 from the free throw line down the stretch to win the game, 80-71.

Adelphi held a 50-42 rebound advantage over Queens and forced 17 turnovers while making 12 steals. As a team they shot 72.0 percent from the free throw line and 54.5 percent from beyond the arc.

The Knights had three players in double figures, led by Kara Otterbine and Jennifer DiChiara, each with 22. Bartlett had 18 points.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, November 25, when they host St. Rose at 5:30 p.m.
