The Longwood University men's soccer team dropped its first Atlantic Soccer Conference match of the season, falling to Adelphi 2-1 in a tightly contest match on Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex. With the win Adelphi improves to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in ASC action, while Longwood falls to 6-7-3 and 1-1 in conference play.
The first half of action was a battle of wills with both teams keeping each other in check, Adelphi had a slight advantage in shots (8-6), while both teams were dead even in corners with two a piece.
Adelphi jumped on the board first, taking the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Chris Clarke controlled the ball near the Longwood goal and sent the ball into the center of the box, where Kemalie Preston slipped the ball into the Lancer goal.
the Panthers would extend their lead to two goals in the 31st minute as Preston made a run down the left sideline with the ball and sent it into the box where a waiting Patrick Figueiredo beat the Lancer goalkeeper far side.
The Lancers nearly capitalized on a corner taken in the first half of the second period, but Adelphi goalie Thorne Holder would come up with a crucial save. However Holder could not stop Longwood in the 65th minute as a free kick taken by Martin Vickerton from 30-yards out found the back of the Panther goal.
Adelphi would keep Longwood off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, securing a 2-1 win. Holder made one save in the win, while Joel Helmick made seven stops for Longwood.
The Panthers return to action on November 8 when they play host to Howard University at 3:00 pm.
