THe Adelphi University women's basketball team topped Georgian Court University, 49-36, this evening in the first game at the new GCU Wellness Center. The Panthers improve to 2-0 while the Lions drop to 0-3.
Senior Serita Lee led Adelphi with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Lekesha Harris was the only other Panther in double figures with 11 points and four boards.
The Lions led early, opening a 7-4 lead through 11:07. Harris knotted the score on a trifecta at 10:05, but Georigan Court maintained a narrow lead until Lee put the Adelphi up on two made free throws with 1:17 left in the first half. The Panthers pulled ahead by four points and held the 20-16 advantage into intermission.
Adelphi kept its rally going into the second half, opening an 18 point lead on a 16-4 rally with 10:35 left in regulation. The Lions responded on a 12-3 run to close the gap to nine points, 48-32, at 3:07. The Panthers struggled from the field in the final minutes, going 1-4, but were solid from the line, connecting on 6-of-7 shots to hold on for the win, 49-36.
Both teams were plagued with turnovers, as the Lions committed 29 and the Panthers 21. However Adelphi shot much better, going 44 percent from beyond the arc and 73.3 percent from the charity stripe.
Georgian Court's Patti Foley led all players with 15 points. Lauren Staats had 10 points.
Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, November 22, as they host Queens College at 1:00 p.m.
