Box Score

Farmville, VA - The Adelphi University men's soccer team took on third seed and Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) tournament host Longwood in the championship game. The top seeded Panthers out shot the Lancers, 10-8 but could not find the back of the net, falling 1-0. The loss drops Adelphi to 12-6 overall, while Longwood finishes 9-8-3, including their first ASC title.

The game got off to a slow start with neither team able to settle into a rhythm. The two teams traded possession several times throughout the first half with Adelphi outshooting the Lancers 5-3. All three of Longwoods first half shots where broken up by the Panther defense who managed to block all of them. Neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save in the first half, as both teams entered the locker room in a 0-0 stalemate.

Adelphi came out in the second half taking an early chance at net in the 49th minute, but were unsuccessful. Kevin Chico nearly put the Lancers on top in the 66th minute, getting a clear look at goal but Adelphi's Thorne Holder turned the attempt aside.

The Lancers were able to take a 1-0 lead three minutes later on a Martin Vickerton goal. Brian Germain slipped the ball to a Vickerton who was standing on the edge of the six-yard line. Vickerton settled the ball and beat Holder, giving Longwood a 1-0 advantage.

Adelphi pressured the Longwood defense down the stretch but could not get the equalizer, as Lancer goalie Joel Helmick made two big saves to secure the win.
