The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Post University on the first night of the Adelphi Tip-Off Classic on Saturday, November 15. The Panthers hit on 52 percent of their shots in the first half, building a 40-29 halftime lead, but could not hold off the Eagles, falling 73-68. The loss gives Adelphi an 0-1 record heading into the second day of action at the Tip-Off Classic, while Post is 1-0.
Adelphi came out firing, opening the game with a 10-3 run that included back-to-back three pointers from Richard Byrd and Chris Diasparra. The Panthers extended the lead to 10, 15-5 on another Byrd triple and pushed even farther ahead as Steffon Farley nailed two free throws, making the score 24-9.
With 8:18 on the clock Adelphi enjoyed the largest lead of the game as their cushion grew to 20 points, 31-11 on a Casey Cosgrove three pointer. However from there Post started to chip away at the Panther lead, bringing it back down to 15 with 2:57 remaining on a James Lee jumper. The Eagles closed to within 10 points on an Omar Robinson three pointer, but a Cosgrove free throw made the count, 40-29 at the half.
Post wasted little time in the second frame as they opened with a quick 6-0 run to pull to within five, 40-35 on a Spencer Smith lay-up. The Eagles kept attacking and took their first lead of the game, 45-44, with 14:21 left on another Robinson three.
Adelphi responded with a 6-0 run, that was capped by a Cosgrove lay-up, giving the Panthers a 50-45 edge. Post countered by scoring 11 of the next 16 points to retake the lead 56-55 with 8:30 on the clock. Adelphi knotted the game at 64 on a Sky Khaleel lay-up with 4:53 to go, but could not get over the hump, falling 73-68.
Post was led by Cecil Stinson's 21 points and six assists, while Smith added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Adelphi put three players in double figures, led by Cosgrove's 14 points and eight rebounds. Khaleel posted 12 points and Farley added 10, including shooting 8-8 from the charity stripe.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, November 16 when they play host to Dominican College on the second day of the Adelphi Tip-Off Classic.
