Nov. 14, 2008

Box Score

Farmville, VA - The Adelphi University men's soccer team traveled to Farmville, Virginia to take on fourth seeded NJIT in the semifinals of the Atlantic Soccer Conference tournament on Friday, November 14. Senior Patrick Figueiredo tallied two goals to help the #1 Panthers to a 3-0 win. With the win Adelphi improves to 12-5 and advance to the finals of the ASC tournament on Sunday, November 16.

The Panthers have won 12 of their last 13 matches, got a pair of goals from two-time ASC Player of the Year Patrick Figueiredo and another goal from John Koutsounadis in the win.

Adelphi goalkeeper Thorne Holder, who missed four games at the start of the season due to injury, but whose insertion into the lineup as the starter coincided with the Panthers's remarkable run, made seven stops to post his sixth shutout of the season. It was his second shutout of the Highlanders following a 2-0 win at home against NJIT on October 18.

Figueiredo collected his 14th and 15th goals of the season in advancing his team to Sunday's ASC championship game against host Longwood. The Lancers tied Houston Baptist, 1-1, in double overtime but moved on to the final with a 4-2 win on penalty kicks against Houston Baptist.

In a rough physical game that saw Adelphi whistled for 16 fouls and referee Mike Andrews issue five cautions--three to NJIT and two to Adelphi--the game stayed scoreless until the 61st minute when a penalty kick was awarded and then turned into a goal by Figueiredo at 60:56.

Koutsounadis made it 2-0 for the Panthers on a breakaway at 64:47 and then Figueiredo iced the win by converting a turnover into his second goal of the day with just over two minutes remaining.

Adelphi will appear in the ASC Championship game on Sunday, November 16.
